Rotary Club of Ala Moana Timeline
1905 - Feb
23, Lawyer Paul Harris and Three friends meet in a Chicago office,
beginning the Rotary movement.
1907 - Rotary’s first
project, a public lavatory, begins its service to community.
1913 - Rotary clubs contribute
US$25,000 for flood relief in Indiana and Ohio, USA.The first cooperative
ventures of clubs.
1915 - Rotary adopts a code of
ethics, a prelude to The 4-Way Test.
1917 - An endowment fund,
precursor of The Rotary Foundation, is established.
1918 - First Foundation
contribution received: US$26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City,
Missouri, USA.
1924 - Rotary opens its first
international office in Zurich, Switzerland.
1930 - The Rotary Foundation
awards its first grant: US$500 to the International Society for Crippled
Children, the forerunner of today’s Easter Seals. At its 25th
anniversary, Rotary has more than 150,000
members in 3,349 clubs in 62 countries.
1933 - The 4-Way Test.
1945 - Rotary plays a
significant role in the birth of the United Nations with 50 Rotarians
serving as delegates, advisors, and consultants to the UN Charter
conference.
1946 - Rotary opens clubs in
Belgium, Burma, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, and Singapore.
1947 - Rotary founder Paul
Harris dies. Rotarians worldwide give more than US$1 million to The Rotary
Foundation. The first Rotary Foundation program, Graduate Fellowships
(today’s Ambassadorial Scholarships), sent 18 students abroad to seven
countries. Today, more than 1,100 students study overseas each year.
1961 - Feng Yuan Rotary Club
chartered on April 24, 1961.
1962 - Interact begins.
Rotary launches World Community Service.
1965 -
Matching Grants and Group Study Exchange program established.
Abico
Rotary Club established on 12-12-1965, and chartered on 1967 Jan 8.
1966
- Rotary Club of Abiko was founded on August 1, 1966.
1968 - Rotary launches
Rotaract for youth 18-30.
1972 - Waikiki
and Honolulu Rotary Club sponsor Rotary Club of Ala Moana with 24 members.
Club was organized on May 18, 1972, and admitted to Rotary International
on 6-20-1972 as the 21st club in D500 (later D5000), one year
after West Pearl Harbor and 1 year before Hawaii Kai. Ala Moana first met
at Pagoda Hotel, but soon moved to Ala Moana Hotel.
Club
was
founded by Bill Wong, Sully Sullivan, and Euton Wong, who became our first
three presidents. Charter night was on July 13, 1972 at the Ala Moana
Hotel with Immediate Past Governor, Ralph Honda attending. District
Governor was Morley Theaker.
1973
- RC of Ala Moana won all major awards
(except club bulletin) at the Kauai District Conference. Installation
for the second president Sully Sullivan was at Kahala Hilton, for $25.00
1974 - Tri-Sister
Club established on (6-6-1974 Ala Moana/Abiko) (2-18-1970 Abiko/Feng Yuan)
July
1974 = 1st Children of Tri-Sister Club exchange
1975 - Abiko
celebrates 10th anniversary on 11-12. Lunch
price at RC of Ala Moana raised to $3.75.
1977
- Rotary returns to Spain. Rotary Convention in Tokyo draws a record
39,834 attendants.
1978 - Rotary creates Health,
Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants to improve health, alleviate hunger, and
enhance human and social development.
1981 - Rotary establishes
Endowment for World Understanding and Peace.
1982 - Rotary Club of Ala
Moana’s 10th Anniversary in June.
1985 - PolioPlus program
launched
1986 - Rotary membership tops
one million. Rotary Village Corp. established.
1987 - Rotary admits women.
First Hawaii woman Rotarian is Gloria Chang of Metro Club.
First woman member of Rotary Club of Ala Moana is Sam Shenkus,
sponsored by Art Lee, who sponsored many of our other male and female
members.
1990 - Rotary Club of Abiko
celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary
1992 - Rotary Club of Ala
Moana’s 20th Anniversary. Bruce Luxton President. Abiko and
Feng Yuan attended.
1994 -
The Rotary Foundation begins the Permanent Fund.
Tri sister club celebrates 20th anniversary on 6-13
1995 -
Hiroshima Jonan was chartered on April 18, 1995. Abiko
celebrated its 30th anniversary.
1996 - Feng Yuan RC celebrates
35th year, Tri-sister club met. After failing to find a
local Bone Marrow donor for Alana Dung, a grand daughter of Tyau Chung, a
member at the time, a request was sent to Abico, and through Abico to Feng
Yuan. A match was found in Taiwan.
1999 -
Rotary establishes World Peace Scholarships and seven Rotary
Centers for International Studies at eight prestigious universities in six
countries. Feng
Yuan suffers earthquake. Abico and Ala Moana sent monetary assistance.
2000 - RC of Abiko celebrates
35th anniversary on October 16.
Tri-sister clubs celebrated its 27th anniversary.
2001 - RC
of Feng Yuan celebrates 40th anniversary on April 21.(Chartered
on 4-24-1961) Rotary
Club of Hiroshima Jonan signed agreement to be a sister club of Rotary
Club of Ala Moana on December 6, 2001.
2002 - Rotary
Club of Ala Moana became the first 100% HRYF Club in D5000. Rotary
Club of Ala Moana’s 30th Anniversary. Rotary Club of
Ala Moana adopts Sheridan Park. D5000
supported Rotaplast to Philippines.
2003 - Rotary
Club of Ala Moana’s first Big Band Bash in March 2004 at
the Ala Moana Hotel, attended by about 225 people and earned record
income. Rotary Club of Ala Moana supported Rotohomes in Fiji,
joint-project with New Zealand. Rotary Club of Ala Moana together
with Stanford Alumni Club sent three containers of wheelchairs to Vietnam,
Cambodia, and Thailand, in March 2003. Centennial project switched
to Pahole Project. 30th
year of Tri-sister club relationship.
2004 -
Rotary celebrates its 100 year of civic service on 2/23/05 with a
plaque at Pahole Rare Plant Reserve. Chicken sale in Jan 2005.
Second Big Band Bash on 4-9-05, attended by 175 people. RC
of Ala Moana achieved 100% Paul Harris.
2005 -
Soy milk project with Hiroshima. Abiko celebrated its 40th
anniv on October 16, 2005. Feng
Yuan celebrated its 44th Anniversary in April, 2005.
