Rotary D5000 District Conference: Leadership, Community Service, and Compassionate Action

The Rotary D5000 District Conference this past weekend brought together Rotarians from across the state to celebrate achievements, foster fellowship, and inspire action.

One of the highlights of the conference was the recognition of outstanding leadership skills and contributions made by Rotarians in their clubs and communities. Awards were presented to individuals, including our own Sue Ann Lee, who demonstrated exceptional dedication, innovation, and impact in their service projects and club activities.

The conference also featured a hands-on community service project that aimed to clean up a local stream using Genki balls. These small, biodegradable balls contain beneficial microorganisms that help break down pollutants and improve water quality. Participants threw the Genki balls into the stream, effectively contributing to the restoration of the local ecosystem. The clean-up project not only had a positive impact on the environment but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among the Rotarians, and it was lots of fun.

A key event during the conference was a talk by Duane Kurisu, a local business and community leader, who shared his insights on compassionate leadership. Kurisu recounted his journey in creating Kahauiki Village, a groundbreaking project that provides housing and support services to formerly houseless individuals and families in Hawaii. His talk emphasized the importance of empathy, collaboration, and innovation in achieving compassionate leadership and making a lasting difference in the lives of those in need.

Throughout the conference, Rotarians were inspired by the shared experiences, stories, and achievements of their fellow members. The sense of community and shared goals was strengthened, as participants were motivated to take action in their own clubs and communities.
